Working as a nurse in a tourist town, I encounter many foreigners. I recently enjoyed a conversation with one of these foreigners, a patient of mine. She had a thick accent that I couldn’t place although she spoke very good English.

I asked her where she was from and she replied Australia. I gave her a questioning look and said, “Uh, your accent is not Australian.” She told me she was originally from Greece and that she had been living in Australia for the last 40 years.

We chatted casually and she commented on how wonderful her trip to the United States had been. “Your country is so beautiful and the people are so friendly. They are always smiling.”

Whoa, back up here. Americans? Friendly? I have heard it before from the travel community but being a native Californian, I’ve never believed it. Until 4 years ago, I’d always lived in Socal and the people there are anything but friendly. I will say, though, the farther north you go, the friendlier the people become. Especially Alaska! Alaskans are probably the friendliest Americans I’ve met.

I’m curious as to what other people think about this. Do you find Americans to be friendly?
