The current trend with airlines is to charge fees for checked baggage. I recently had to pay a checked baggage fee for the first time and I absolutely cringed in doing so. It’s just not right. Luggage is part of traveling, plain & simple. Planes are designed with cargo holds so why not accomodate the customer and allow their baggage to fly free. At the very least, increase the cost of the air ticket by a couple of bucks so it gets included. I know that many people fly with their carry-on bag only. My problem with this is the TSA’s restrictions on liquids (100 ml per item) as well as some prohibited items. There are certain items that I travel with that I simply cannot take in a carry-on and I don’t want to be bothered with trying to shop for those items once I’ve arrived at my destination.
For instance, I need:
⇒ Contact lens solution, the smallest size you can buy it in is 120 ml. Why don’t manufacturers take a look at this?
⇒ First Aid Kit, what nurse travels without one? Complete with syringes, needles, medications, suture, scissors, etc…
⇒ Nail clippers, metal nail file, I guess I could leave these behind as manicures in Asia are generally less than $10.
⇒ Swiss Army Knife, it comes in handy for all sorts of things!
Carry-ons also don’t work well for bringing things home. On my last trip to Thailand, I took a cooking class and ended up buying 4 different cooking sauces. Those would never have made it on the plane in a carry-on. And with my checked baggage, I like the fact that I don’t have to worry about hauling it around with me during a layover as airlines will check it through.
What is your vote? Do you prefer checked or carry-on and why?
