I really don’t remember when I came up with the phrase, “Life is too short to work full-time!” I think it was somewhere in my 20’s and it probably contributed to my many years of schooling trying to figure out what I wanted to be when “I grew up.” I always instinctually knew that life was meant to be enjoyed, to be lived with passion and that work would always take a backseat to living my passions.
A year ago, my 40 year old brother suddenly died. It has been a real eye-opener for me and has also given me a sense of urgency to live life to its fullest. Now, more than ever, I want to make my quote a reality. Not just want, but need. I recently read the book The 4-Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferris and what he has to say is so very true. People need to stop making excuses for not doing what they really want to do. We need to drop the fear, look at the bottom line, and realize that the world is not going to fall apart if we take some time off of work or take an extended vacation, what Ferris calls a “mini-retirement.”
Why wait until retirement age to fulfill some of those dreams or to travel to unknown places? The time is now, I say….
